  • 1 box of your favorite brownie mix: Choose a mix designed for a 9-inch pan. You’ll also need the additional ingredients specified on the box, typically eggs, water, and oil. For an extra rich, fudgy result, consider a brand like Betty Crocker Favorites Fudge Brownie Mix. Alternatively, if you prefer to bake from scratch, feel free to use your go-to homemade brownie recipe.
  • 2 cups dark purple frosting: This vibrant color truly sets the spooky mood. You can purchase pre-made deep purple decorator icing, such as Global Sugar Art Cake & Cupcake Buttercream Frosting. For a homemade touch, prepare a simple vanilla buttercream frosting and tint it with purple food coloring. Feel free to experiment with other Halloween colors like orange, green, or black for different effects!
  • 1 package of large marshmallow Peep Ghosts: These iconic marshmallow treats are the stars of our brownies, bringing instant ghostly charm. If Peep Ghosts are hard to find, don’t worry! Other Halloween-themed Peeps like Frankenstein, pumpkins, or skulls work equally well and allow for creative variations.
  • Sprinkles of choice & candy eyeballs: These are essential for adding personality and sparkle to your spooky creations. Simple Instructions: How to Make Spooky Peep Ghost Brownies

Follow these straightforward steps to create your hauntingly delicious ghost brownies. The process is designed to be quick and fun, making it ideal for bakers of all skill levels, especially those looking for an effortless Halloween dessert.

  1. Prepare and Bake Your Brownies: Start by preparing your favorite brownies. If using a boxed mix for a 9-inch pan, follow the package directions precisely, typically calling for ingredients like eggs, water, and oil. For instance, if using Betty Crocker Favorites Fudge Brownie Mix, refer to their specific instructions. If you prefer a homemade base, prepare your cherished brownie recipe. Once baked, it’s crucial to let the brownies cool completely in the pan before proceeding. Rushing this step can lead to a messy frosting application and crumbling brownies.
  2. Frost with Ghoulish Purple: Once the brownies are entirely cool, it’s time to add a layer of vibrant color. Generously frost the tops of the brownies with dark purple frosting. As mentioned in the ingredients, you can use a high-quality store-bought option like Global Sugar Art Cake & Cupcake Buttercream Frosting, Decorator Icing Deep Purple. Alternatively, prepare a simple vanilla buttercream frosting and add purple food coloring until you achieve your desired shade. Remember, while purple is traditional for these ghost brownies, you’re free to use any color that matches your Halloween theme, such as orange, green, or black!
  3. Arrange Your Peep Ghosts: With the purple frosting spread evenly across the brownies, it’s time to bring your ghosts to life. Carefully unwrap your package of Peep Ghosts. Evenly space nine Peep Ghosts on top of the frosted brownies. This typically allows for one ghost per brownie square once cut. Feel free to get creative here; if Peep Ghosts aren’t available, other Halloween-themed Peeps like Frankenstein, pumpkins, or skulls can be used to add different characters to your eerie dessert landscape.
  4. Decorate and Serve: The final touches make all the difference! Add your favorite Halloween sprinkles all over the frosted surface around your ghosts. Then, gently press candy eyeballs onto each Peep Ghost to give them their spooky gaze. Once decorated, your Spooky Peep Ghost Brownies are ready to be cut into squares and served. Enjoy the delighted reactions as your guests encounter these adorable, delicious Halloween treats!

How to Store Spooky Ghost Brownies to Keep Them Fresh

To ensure your Spooky Ghost Brownies remain as delicious and delightful as possible, proper storage is key. Here are some simple guidelines to keep them fresh for longer:

  • Room Temperature Storage: For immediate enjoyment and to maintain their soft, fudgy texture, store your Ghost Brownies in an airtight container at room temperature. They will stay fresh and tasty for up to 3 days. Be sure to keep them away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
  • Refrigeration for Extended Freshness: If you’re planning to make these Halloween treats ahead of time, or if you have leftovers you want to keep longer, they’ll happily keep in the refrigerator for up to a week. Again, an airtight container is essential to prevent them from drying out or absorbing other odors from the fridge.
  • Serving Tip: For the absolute best texture and flavor, especially if they’ve been refrigerated, allow your brownies to come back to room temperature for about 30 minutes before serving. This softens the brownies and frosting, enhancing their rich taste.

More Creative Variations for Your Halloween Brownies Recipe

One of the joys of baking these ghost brownies is their versatility! While the classic purple and white ghost design is fantastic, there are countless ways to customize them to match your unique Halloween vision. Here are some ideas to inspire your creativity and add even more fun to your spooky treats:

  • Mix and Match Peeps: Don’t limit yourself to just ghost Peeps! Experiment with an assortment of Halloween-themed Peeps like mischievous Frankenstein monsters, cheerful pumpkins, or creepy skulls to create a diverse and spooky cast of characters on your brownies. This is especially fun if you’re making a large batch for a party.
  • Play with Frosting Colors and Flavors: While dark purple frosting is iconic for these brownies, don’t hesitate to experiment with different frosting colors! Imagine bright green for a monster theme, vibrant orange for pumpkins, or even ominous black for a truly gothic touch. You can also vary the frosting flavor—a cream cheese frosting or a peppermint extract for a twist could be delightful.
  • Add Extra Fun Toppings: Take your brownies to the next level with additional toppings. Sprinkle crushed Oreo cookies for a “dirt” effect, add colourful candy corn for a pop of traditional Halloween color, or drizzle them with melted white or dark chocolate for an elegant touch. Gummy worms, spider rings, or mini chocolate chips can also add a playful element.
  • Enhance the Brownie Batter: Before baking, mix in some additional treats to your brownie batter. White chocolate chips will add a creamy contrast, while semi-sweet chocolate chips can enhance the fudgy richness. You could also swirl in a bit of peanut butter or cream cheese for a marbled effect before baking.
  • Spooky Presentation Ideas: Instead of traditional squares, consider cutting your brownies into different shapes using Halloween cookie cutters (e.g., bats, pumpkins, or even smaller ghosts). Arrange them artfully on a serving platter with dry ice (safely!) for a dramatic smoky effect, or scatter edible glitter for a touch of eerie magic.

FAQs About Spooky Halloween Ghost Brownies

Got questions about whipping up these ghoulishly good brownies? We’ve got answers to help you create the perfect Halloween treat!

  • Can I use homemade brownies instead of a mix?
Absolutely! If you have a cherished, go-to brownie recipe that always turns out perfectly, feel free to use it as the base for these Spooky Ghost Brownies. The key is to ensure the homemade brownies are completely cool before you begin frosting and decorating them. This prevents the frosting from melting and ensures a clean, professional finish.
  • Can I make these Halloween ghost brownies ahead of time?
Yes, these brownies are an excellent make-ahead dessert! You can prepare them a couple of days in advance of your Halloween celebrations. Simply store them in an airtight container at room temperature (or in the refrigerator for longer storage, as detailed in the storage section). Decorate them closer to the serving time if you want the Peeps and sprinkles to look their freshest, though they hold up well for a day or two already decorated.
  • What if I can’t find Peep Ghosts?
No worries at all! The beauty of these Halloween treats is their flexibility. If Peep Ghosts are out of stock or not available in your area, you have several creative alternatives. You can use any other Halloween-themed marshmallow treats you find, such as pumpkin-shaped Peeps or even regular large marshmallows. If using regular marshmallows, you can use an edible food marker to draw simple ghost faces on them, or dip them partially in white chocolate and add candy eyeballs once set. Get creative with your own decorations!
  • What are some tips for perfectly fudgy brownies (even from a mix)?
To get the best results from a boxed mix, always follow the package instructions, but consider these enhancements:

    • **Don’t Overbake:** This is crucial for fudginess. Brownies are often done when a toothpick inserted near the edge comes out with moist crumbs, not wet batter. The center might still look slightly underdone, but it will set as it cools.
    • **Add Extra Richness:** Stir in a handful of chocolate chips (dark, milk, or white) into the batter before baking for extra pockets of melted chocolate.
    • **Cool Completely:** Patience is a virtue here! Letting brownies cool fully, or even chilling them, makes them easier to cut cleanly and ensures the frosting doesn’t melt.
  • Can I use other types of frosting?
Absolutely! While purple buttercream is classic, you can get creative. A chocolate ganache, a simple vanilla glaze with food coloring, or even a store-bought cream cheese frosting tinted purple would work wonderfully. Just ensure your chosen frosting has enough body to hold the Peep Ghosts upright.
