This recipe builds upon the beloved foundation of classic crisp rice cereal treats but introduces a delightful twist. While the original inspiration came from our popular Halloween Rice Krispie Treats, we decided to experiment by swapping out the traditional crisp rice cereal for the satisfying crunch of Cheerios! This simple change gives these Halloween cereal treats a unique texture and flavor profile that stands out. The added peanut butter in the base mixture creates a rich, chewy consistency, making them easier to shape into those delightfully bumpy clusters that form the bodies of our ghosts and monsters.
Imagine the smiles these homemade Halloween cereal treats will bring! Whether you’re hosting a costume party, preparing for a school event, or simply want to add some festive cheer to your home, these no-bake wonders are your secret weapon. They require minimal kitchen skills and ingredients you likely already have on hand, making them a perfect last-minute addition to any Halloween festivity.

Essential Tips for Perfect Halloween Cereal Treats
Before you dive into crafting your spooky cereal treats, consider these helpful tips to ensure a flawless and delicious outcome:
- Choose Fresh Cereal: Always start with fresh, crispy cereal. Stale cereal will result in a less enjoyable texture. While we love Cheerios for their unique crunch and shape, any light, crispy breakfast cereal will work wonderfully. Experiment with different cereals to find your favorite!
- Melt Marshmallows Gently: Mini marshmallows melt quickest and most evenly. If you only have large marshmallows, they will work too, but remember the key is low and slow heat. Avoid rushing the melting process for both the butter and marshmallows. A gentle melt prevents scorching and ensures a smooth, consistent mixture that coats your cereal beautifully, leading to a superior final texture.
- Shape Quickly: Once the cereal mixture is ready, it’s crucial to work swiftly. Use a greased spoon or a small cookie scoop to portion out about two tablespoons of the mixture for each treat. Then, quickly shape them into rough balls or irregular forms to create your ghosts and monsters. The mixture will firm up as it cools, so speed is your ally here!
- Prevent Stickiness: If you find the cereal mixture too sticky to handle, a light spray of non-stick cooking spray on your hands, spoon, or scoop will make the shaping process much easier. This simple trick will save you time and frustration.
- Allow to Set: For best results when dipping, allow your shaped cereal balls to air dry for at least 30 minutes. If time permits, letting them dry overnight in a zip-lock bag can further firm them up, making them even easier to coat evenly with chocolate.
Ingredients You’ll Need for These Easy Halloween Cereal Treats
Gather these simple ingredients to create your festive peanut butter and white chocolate cereal treats:
For the Peanut Butter Cereal Base:
- Salted butter: Essential for richness and helping the mixture come together.
- Mini marshmallows: The binding agent that creates that irresistible gooey texture.
- Creamy peanut butter: Adds a delicious nutty flavor and extra chewiness.
- Cheerios (or any crisp rice cereal): The star ingredient for that satisfying crunch.
For the White Chocolate Coating & Decorations:
- White chocolate chips or candy melts: For a smooth, dippable coating. Candy melts are often easier to work with for dipping.
- Purple sprinkles / candy eyeballs: For decorating your ghostly and monstrous creations. Get creative with other Halloween-themed sprinkles!
The combination of peanut butter and white chocolate is a match made in heaven, especially when paired with the crisp texture of cereal. These ingredients are readily available and come together to form a treat that is both familiar and excitingly festive.

How to Make Our Delicious Halloween Cereal Treats
Follow these straightforward steps to create your own batch of spooky and sweet cereal treats:
Crafting the Peanut Butter Cereal Base:
- Melt the Butter and Marshmallows: In a sturdy 4-quart saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. It’s important to melt it slowly to prevent burning. Once the butter is fully melted, maintain a low heat and add the mini marshmallows. Stir continuously until the marshmallows begin to soften and melt down. Then, stir in the creamy peanut butter. Continue stirring constantly to ensure the peanut butter fully incorporates and doesn’t scorch, and that the marshmallows melt evenly. This process should take about 5 minutes. Once the mixture is smooth and fully combined, remove the pan from the heat.
- Combine with Cereal and Shape: Immediately add your chosen cereal (Cheerios or crisp rice cereal) to the saucepan with the marshmallow mixture. Stir until every piece of cereal is thoroughly coated. Work quickly while the mixture is still warm and pliable. Use a spoon or a greased scoop to portion out approximately two tablespoons of the mixture for each treat. Gently shape these portions into rough balls or irregular clusters to form the bodies of your ghosts and monsters. If the mixture becomes too sticky, lightly spray your hands or spoon with non-stick cooking spray.
- Allow to Air Dry: Arrange the shaped cereal balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Allow them to air dry for about 30 minutes to firm up. For even better results and easier dipping, you can let them dry overnight in a zip-lock bag or an airtight container. This step is crucial for achieving a sturdy base for your chocolate coating.
Applying the White Chocolate Coating & Decorations:
- Melt the White Chocolate: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt your white chocolate chips or candy melts. Heat in 30-second intervals, stirring thoroughly after each interval, until the chocolate is completely smooth and creamy. Be careful not to overheat the chocolate, as it can seize.
- Dip and Place: Take each cereal ball one at a time and dip the top half into the melted white chocolate. Allow any excess chocolate to drip off. Carefully place the dipped treat onto your parchment-lined baking sheet, with the cereal side down and the chocolate-coated side up.
- Decorate the Ghosts: While the white chocolate is still wet, immediately add two candy eyeballs to each ghost treat. The melted chocolate will act as a “glue,” securing the eyeballs in place as it sets.
- Decorate the Monsters: For your monster treats, get creative! Hold the bottom of the cereal treat and liberally sprinkle purple sprinkles (or other fun Halloween sprinkles) over all sides of the white chocolate coating. Add candy eyeballs for a quirky monster face. To minimize mess, place a shallow bowl underneath your treats while sprinkling to catch any stray sprinkles.
- Allow Chocolate to Set: Let the decorated treats sit undisturbed on the parchment paper until the white chocolate has fully set. This can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on your room temperature. Once set, they are ready to serve!

Halloween Cereal Party Treats (Peanut Butter & White Chocolate)
By Kim Lange
These fun and festive cereal treats combine two of our favorite flavors: white chocolate and peanut butter! Prepare for gooey, chewy delights made with marshmallow and peanut butter, deliciously coated with rich white chocolate and festive Halloween sprinkles to make them officially Fall-ready!
20 mins
Dessert
16 Balls
Ingredients
Peanut Butter Party Treats
- 4 tablespoons salted butter
- 10 oz bag mini marshmallows (or 5 cups)
- ½ cup creamy peanut butter
- 5 ¼ cups crisp rice cereal (like Rice Krispies) or Cheerios
White Chocolate Coating
- 3 cups white chocolate chips or candy melts
- Purple sprinkles / candy eyeballs
Instructions
Peanut Butter Party Treats
- In a 4-quart saucepan, melt butter on low heat slowly to prevent burning. Once butter has melted, keep heat on low and add mini marshmallows. Once marshmallows begin to soften and melt, add peanut butter. Constantly stir the mixture so the peanut butter does not burn and the marshmallows melt evenly (this should take about 5 minutes). Once the mixture is combined and melted, turn off heat and remove the pan from the stove.
- Add cereal to the saucepan and stir until evenly coated with the mixture and well combined. Use a spoon or scoop to get about two tablespoons full of the cereal for each cluster, then roughly shape them into balls to make the ghosts/monsters. Work fast to make your clusters before the mixture starts firming up as it cools down. (Lightly spray your spoon or scoop with non-stick cooking spray if the cereal mixture is too sticky.)
- Place balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet and let the cereal treats air dry for about 30 minutes, or overnight in a zip-lock bag, before dipping them into chocolate.
White Chocolate Coating
- Melt chocolate for 2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds until smooth and creamy. Dip the top half of each ball one at a time into the chocolate and place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet with the cereal side on the bottom and the chocolate on top.
- Add eyeballs for each of the ghosts after you dip them, before the chocolate sets.
- Add sprinkles and candy eyeballs to the monsters before the chocolate sets. You can do this easily by holding the bottom of the cereal treat and sprinkling all the sides and top of the chocolate for the monsters. Make sure you put a bowl underneath for the sprinkles to fall into, so they aren’t everywhere in the kitchen.
- Let chocolate set. Sooo yummy and addicting!!
- You can make these a day or two ahead of time; just make sure you seal them really well in zip-lock bags or a sealed container to keep them fresh.
Notes
If you want to thin the white chocolate out a bit if it’s too thick, use 1 teaspoon of vegetable or canola oil and mix it into the chocolate. Less oil is better.
